Bikers call on Leatherman to move motorcycle property tax bill

(Columbia) Representatives of ABATE of SC gathered in the SC Senate building on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 to ask Senator Leatherman, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, to allow H4307 to be heard by the Finance Committee so that it can progress to the Senate floor for an up or down vote by the full Senate.  H4307 would correct the disparity between property tax assessments for passenger vehicles and motorcycles.  Under current law, motorcycles are assessed at 10.5% while private passenger vehicles are assessed at 6%.

ABATE members left both verbal and written messages with Senator Leatherman’s office asking him to act on this bill and not let it die in his committee.  Based on conversations between ABATE members and the majority of state senators, if H4307 reached the senate floor, it would become law.  With approximately 80 thousand motorcycles registered in South Carolina and the positive impact motorcycle riders have regarding fuel consumption – motorcycles get 35 to 65 miles per gallon – its time to stop penalizing bikers at the property tax pump when they are helping reduce demand at the gasoline pump!

ABATE representatives from Aiken, Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Georgetown, Moncks Corner, Mount Pleasant, Rock Hill, and Sumter were in attendance.

ABATE of SC encourages all motorcycle owners in South Carolina to contact Senator Leatherman’s office and ask him to allow H4307 to be heard by his committee so that the full senate has a chance to vote on it this legislative secession.  Senator Leatherman can be reached at (803) 212-6640
